Care and Services for Older Felines

Cats are masters at hiding discomfort, which means their senior years often bring changes that can be easy to miss. At Florida Aid to Animals, we’re here to help you navigate this stage with gentle, affordable, and proactive care that keeps your older cat comfortable and thriving.

Aging is a natural part of life — and with the right support, your senior cat can enjoy many happy, healthy years by your side.

When Is a Cat Considered a Senior?

Most cats enter their senior years around 6-7 years old, though some begin showing age-related changes earlier. Elderly cats are 12 years and older. Because cats are so good at masking symptoms, regular checkups become even more important as they age.

Why Senior Wellness Care Matters

Senior cats are at higher risk for conditions such as:

  • Kidney disease
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Dental disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Vision or hearing changes

Many of these conditions can be managed — or even slowed — when caught early. That’s why we recommend:

  • Wellness exams yearly
  • Annual bloodwork (or every 6 months for older or medically fragile cats)
  • Routine dental care
  • Weight and nutrition monitoring

Common Signs of Aging in Cats

Cats rarely complain, so watch for subtle changes like:

  • Increased thirst or urination
  • Weight loss (even with a good appetite)
  • Decreased appetite
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Matted fur or reduced grooming
  • Hiding more than usual
  • Changes in litter box habits
  • Stiffness, hesitation to jump, or reduced mobility
  • Behavioral changes (confusion, vocalizing at night, irritability)

If something feels “off,” trust your instincts — early evaluation makes a big difference.

Dental Care

Dental disease is extremely common in older cats and can cause pain, infection, and appetite changes. Regular cleanings and monitoring help keep your cat comfortable.

available for dogs & cats under 10 years old already spayed or neutered.*

*Any pet 6 years of age or older will be required to have Pre-Anesthetic Blood Work ($115). Our cut-off age for Dentals is right at 10 years old. Any patient aged 10 years or older, and or with health problems (such as heart murmurs or seizures) will be referred to a local full service clinic that is equipped to handle high risk patients safely.

Nutrition & Weight Support

Senior cats may need:

  • Kidney-friendly diets
  • High-protein foods
  • Weight gain or weight loss plans
  • Specialized diets for thyroid or digestive issues

We’ll help you choose the right nutrition for your cat’s needs.

Vaccinations for Senior Cats

Senior cats still benefit from staying up to date on core vaccines, especially if they go outdoors or live with other pets.

Core Vaccines

  • Rabies — required by Florida law;  Rabies 1 year - $27.75 / Rabies 3 year - $32.00
  • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia) $27.75

Lifestyle Vaccines

  • FeLV (Feline Leukemia) — recommended for outdoor cats or cats exposed to unknown cats. $30.00

Our team tailors vaccine schedules based on your cat’s age, health, and lifestyle to keep them protected without unnecessary stress.

Cats thrive on comfort and consistency, especially as they age.
